Independent and neutral resources for effective, efficient arbitration hearings in New York City
Marking the five-year anniversary of the fall of Kabul in August of 2021, this webinar is a call to action on how the U.S. legal community can support displaced Afghan judges, lawyers, and prosecutors in their resettlement and help them rebuild their legal careers. Expert speakers will discuss the history of U.S. involvement in Afghanistan, the impact of past rule-of-law initiatives, the 2021 withdrawal, and the ongoing needs for pathways to safety and stability for our Afghan colleagues. The panel will address immigration hurdles and the professional and personal adjustments of resettled Afghan professionals in the U.S. This webinar will highlight the ABA Afghan Legal Professionals Scholarship & Mentoring Pilot Program, a dedicated support initiative that assists candidates through mentoring support, helps candidates to obtain full-tuition LLM scholarships through 25 partnering law schools, and offers need- and merit-based stipend awards in appropriate cases. Dozens of experienced U.S. lawyers who are ABA members serve as mentors to help Afghan participants navigate the law school process, bar exams, career counseling, networking, and cultural adjustment as a “friend in law.” Moreover, volunteer companies offer complimentary legal English assessments and coursework (USLawEssentials), online legal research training (LexisNexis), law school resources and bar prep (Themis Bar Review), and document translation services (Juriscribe) through this initiative to support the legal professionals who worked to advance the rule of law, democracy, equality, and human rights within the U.S.-backed justice system in Afghanistan.
